Is It Worthwhile Having a Washing Machine?

Posted By on December 19, 2010

With many people trying to cut expenses wherever they can, someone recently asked me if it were worthwhile doing without a washing machine. The answer to this question is a resounding no. Washing machines are essential household appliances and it will end up costing you more if you try to live without one.

Many people try to replace washing machines with trips to laundrettes. This saves you the cost of buying the machine and paying to run it. But, laundrettes are by no means free, and you’ll end up paying a fair bit for every wash. You can pay around two pounds per wash, and while this may seem like a small amount of money, it will add up week after week. So in the long run buying a washing machine is going to be the cheaper option.

Even if it were cheaper to use a laundrette, it’s dreadfully inconvenient. Having to gather all your clothes together and then walk down to the laundrette to wash them is a waste of time. Even worse, you have to wait for your clothes to finish. This mean you’ll be spending your precious free time reading a magazine in a laundrette rather than at home with your loved ones.

After a bit of consideration, it’s painfully clear that buying this item is the only real option. Using a laundrette is OK for short term stays, but if you are living anywhere for a significant period of time, be sure to invest in a washing machine.
