Building Your Own Surround Sound Speakers

Posted By on September 7, 2010

In this article we are going to talk about how fun and easy making your own surround speakers can be. Since a lot of surround systems already incorporate a subwoofer for the low frequencies, your surround speakers do not have to be big and capable of providing a lot of bass. Knowing this, it is relatively easy to improve upon most department store surround systems by building your own speakers.

If you have access to woodworking tools, you can easily build your own set of speakers. A small table saw, a drill and a sander will take care of most of your speaker box building needs. There are few online stores on the internet that have a wide variety of speaker building components. If you Google “speaker building supplies” you can usually come up with some very good suppliers for your project, some with hundreds of speakers to choose from.

There are many good resources around the internet to show you which drivers work well together and how to wire them for the proper frequencies and what crossover materials you will need. If you already have a subwoofer and your surround speakers are going to be small, you may want to use a small full range driver with a tweeter for extended highs in each of your boxes. You may also want to look at an adjustable mounting system so you can mount your speakers on the wall and point them in the exact direction you want.

As well as the internal parts of your speakers you will also want to consider the outside of them. There is acoustically transparent speaker cloth for the front of your speakers and laminate coverings for the outside of your speaker boxes. Small terminal blocks can be mounted in the back of your speakers to give them a more professional look and make wiring to your receiver easier.

In addition to speaker building forums on the internet, there are also books on building speakers. Building a set of speakers for yourself or a friend can be a rewarding experience. Not only that you can build a superior speaker for a fraction of the cost of store bought models. So, whether you need a set of surround speakers, a pair of computer speakers or some speakers for your home stereo system, consider building your own.
