Room Dividers and Glass Partitions

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

A popular interior show piece is becoming the retractable glass room divider. It offers clear glass views when closed but can also be fully retractable which offers unique practicality. For many years the market has been flooded with wooden room dividers, originating in the Far East where they are commonly used. The Frameless Glass Door is a modern version of this historically popular room show piece.

Now in the 21st century many of home owners have conservatories which are a common reason for purchasing glass walls or room dividers. They can offer better thermal insulation for home owners but also help to create rooms and enhance privacy. Being fully retractable allows the user to have full control over their household. Similar to bi-folding doors and folding sliding doors they can be fully opened and closed at the users will.

The glass alternative to wooden room dividers offers the same insulation properties (often better) but gives the added feature of allowing clear views.

The single glazed being made from toughened 10mm glass which allows it to be used for all internal purposes. The double glazed frameless glass door however, which is set to be released in April 2010 will be able to be applied to all external as well as internal applications. It will offer the same usability as a bi-folding aluminium or UPVC door but will be completely frameless. U-values may also even be lowered which will help insulation due to the fact that glass has better insulation properties to that of aluminium.

Sunseekerdoors currently manufactures Glass Room Dividers. Formally known as the glass curtain this new product is now known as the Frameless Glass Door. Set to take over the market of room dividers this innovative new product comes in a single glazed and double glazed version.

A double glazed frameless glass door has been sought after for decades in the door industry but without success. This product is finally set to be released in the UK and will be one of the only Countries worldwide to have the opportunity to purchase such a new and innovative product. In years to come it may even become an industry standard and many households will own a fully retractable frameless glass doors system.

Having worked in the industry for many years it is important to me to help inform the public of new trends and innovative new products. A frameless glass door system which can be used for external purposes will be a great achievement and I hope this article helps to a brief explanation to this new product range glass room dividers and frameless glass doors. Always Select the Garage Door Hardware For Your Needs

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

For the long lasting performance of garage doors, you have to maintain it properly on a regular basis. Leaving the garage gate hardware on the detection of any slight problem for repair at a further time will certainly not be a good idea. Such problems, though minute in scale should not be left unattended. It should be addressed then and there itself.

You should make it a habit to clean the door at least four times in a year. Any detergent of mild strength would be enough. Regular clean up of the garage door will lessen the corrosive substances from getting accumulated on the door to a large extent. It should be noted that you should never use any abrasive chemicals or corrosive cleaners on the garage-door. Some of you might be in the habit of salting your driveway where there is extreme cold weather in the winter and the consequent snowfall. However, the elements contained in salt can cause corrosion of the hardware.

The manufacturers of the garage door give the users with a set of instructions as to the maintenance of the hardware or the elements of the door. This manual of instructions would be the best set of advice that you can get. It will have almost all the guidelines necessary to keep the garage hardware in a good condition for a long period of time. It is generally advised to paint the garage door, both inside and outside at the time of installation. It is also recommended to repaint the outer surface once in a year or a couple of years. However, it is better to paint both the surfaces regularly as this will leave no room for the moisture to infiltrate and cause corrosion.

Most of these tasks require no great effort and specialized know-how. However, if you are not in the habit of doing them or if it is uncomfortable performing them, you can hire professional assistance. Garage-door hardware technicians are easily available in every neighborhood. You can check the yellow pages or browse in the internet and will for sure find a help nearby.

Choosing the right garage door hardware is important in your home security. There is a variety of specifications and designs available in the market today. You can click here to know more about garage door hardware

Caring For Your Garage Door – Everything You Need to Know

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Not only is the garage door one of the most visible elements of your valuable home, it is also the largest moving part. Therefore, it pays to keep it looking good and working properly. Otherwise, you’ll get yourself into a lot of inconveniences later on. The maintenance should be included in your weekend to-do list at least a couple of times a year. Your garage doors get a lot more use than you may realize, because in an average household a garage door typically is opened and closed 10-20 times per day. Over a year that is a lot of work on the garage door springs and all its other components. Left unmaintained, garage doors will eventually fail causing not only inconvenience, but possibly even damage or harm to your vehicles, your home and even to your family members and yourself.

Painting is the first and most important defense against moisture and sun damage to your door. It does not only make it attractive, it provides protection as well. Most wooden types will require to be painted every couple of years. Once rotted, wood will be hard to repair and it won’t look good. It may even reach the point where door has to be replaced. Ensuring all cracks are filled and protected with paint is a good investment in the life of your garage door. The same care should also be put in garage doors made of high-quality steel, aluminum or fiberglass – keep them well-protected from the elements.

Perform routine maintenance steps once a month. The most common problem that homeowners encounter is difficulty in opening the garage door. Applying lubricant and making minor adjustments usually resolves this issue. It is recommended to use penetrating oil to all the rollers and hinges at least once a year. It is also good to put a light coating of grease on the track, as this seems to free up the opening and closing, and it also minimizes track noise. Do check all your bolts for tightness and re-tighten as required. If your garage door seems unusually heavy, your springs probably require adjustment. Make sure your opener has a reversing feature. If a reversing feature is not present, it should be replaced. Also test the force setting of your garage door opener by holding the bottom of the door as it closes. If the door does not reverse readily, the force may be excessive and need adjusting. Test the reversing feature after any adjustment.

Aligning the rollers with the track is a fairly simple job that can be performed with just basic tools, wrench, hammer and block of wood. Sagging doors or panels can be repaired by adding supports or even replacing just the damaged panel. Electric garage door openers are quite common and are fairly easy for homeowner installation. Ensure the door is properly adjusted so that it closes completely and the auto safety switch is working. Also pay special attention to the photoeyes located at the bottom of your garage door. If they are bumped or blocked, it will not function correctly. The invisible beam created by the photoeyes is intended for your safety. However, photoeye alignment is not covered under warranty.

Lastly, and probably the easiest way, is to keep it clear of snow, leaves or dirt. They might get stuck in the corners and openings which might affect how they operate. Avoid placing things near the garage door, as it can be pushed into the garage door’s way without you noticing as it might damage the door.

How to Choose Quality Door Locks

Friday, December 4th, 2009

When you choose locks for the door of your home, it is only natural to want locks that look very stylish. It is more important for you to choose locks that will actually do the job you want them to do – lock the door and keep it closed. Therefore you need to look for style and function in choosing quality door locks. Having good locks on the doors is the first line of defense in preventing burglars from stealing your prized possessions.

Two of the top name brands in door locks are Schlage and best. However, just because the locks have this name on them doesn’t mean you should buy the first ones you see on the shelf of the store. All locks should meet certain requirements. You have to choose a lock that will not open easily when you kick the door or one that will not keep the door closed in the event of a gale of wind on the door. The locks you choose should have large thick throw bars, which will give the door the support it needs.

Even though sets of door lock come with the screws you need for installation, you should look at using longer screws. That is because the ones included in the packaging tend to be short that don’t go into the door jambs very far. By choosing to use longer screws, you will ensure that the lock will withstand a lot of pressure before giving way because it will take a lot of pressure to loosen the screws that are embedded deeply into the jamb.

Along with choosing the door locks that you use to open the door from the outside, you can also install a deadbolt above the lock. These do not have a knob to turn on the outside and are flat against the door. When locked, the only way they can be opened from the outside is with a key.

Another factor you have to take into consideration in choosing door locks is the corrosion factor. Some locks will not stand up to the corrosion that salt water causes. If you live near the salt water and your door receives spray from the water in windy weather, you may find that this mars the look of the door handle and knob. You have to read the fine print on the back of the packaging to find out the kind of material it is made from.

How To Install A New Doorbell Yourself

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Its embarrassing to say the least, when you have guests who ring a doorbell that doesn’t ring. You could easily save yourself this embarrassment, with fixing the doorbell yourself. A doorbell is one of the easiest do-it-yourself electrical projects you might undertake! With just a few easy to do steps, you could re-install the bell as well as salvage your reputation among friends.

New Installation

You can take it from me that this DIY project is for the complete and total non-DIYer too. An easy way of installing a doorbell when your existing one does not work is to buy a wireless model. Thats a foolproof enough plan!

In technical terminology, a wireless doorbell is actually a transmitter. On pushing the doorbell button, a coded signal is sent to the receiver attached to the bell, this makes doorbell chime.

Few advantages of the wireless doorbells are:

In case you find it difficult hearing the doorbell (even when its working that is), purchase more than one chime unit and tune all of them to the same button. By doing this, you can place chimes all around the house so that you hear the bell ringing wherever you are.

This involves no wires and no more electricity charge than that for a small battery. In the button unit there is a battery. But you can plug most indoor chime units into an electrical outlet, which rules out charging many sets of batteries.

Though replacing a wired doorbell is easy for most DIY-ers, this one is even faster. At the most you need time to decide between the brass and gold finish, otherwise this project is a blink your eye, finish project!

Replacement Installation

For those of you, really pressed for time or not interested in dealing with wires, just change your wired doorbell with one of the wireless models. You could remove your previous doorbell switch with a flat screwdriver; tie up the wires with an electrical tape, while putting them again into the hole of the doorbell. Then the new switch is fixed to the door frame, ensuring that the hole is covered. In the interiors, plug in the chime unit.

Putting a new wired doorbell in place of an older model should not take you more than a half-hour. What you will need is a new switch and a flat screwdriver. If you want to have things turn out easier or maybe flaunt your superlative toolkit, think of having wire strippers ready.

Those of you, who want to purchase a new chime unit as well, find and change the old chime unit in the same way. Remember which wire goes into which terminal, however, since here they actually have to be connected to the correct terminals on the new chime unit.

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Or, you can get ones that are made from brass and have an antique appearance as they are oil-rubbed. You can even get ones that are made from porcelain that have painted floral designs on them. Or, glass ones that have a rosette shape and have a charming pink or blue color infused right into it. Or, if you are getting one to enter into your house, then you would get an entryway one, this one also locks, but it has a keyed cylinder allowing you to get in from the outside with a key.

There are two other doorknobs to choose from as well. One of them are passage versions that don’t have a locking features. They are generally used for hall or closets doors where the doors need to be just open and shut. The second one is dummy ones, which have the look of the fixture, but none of the mechanisms that allow it to open or shut. Basically, it just sits there looking pretty.

For an easy way to check out all the doorknobs that are available, forget about going to your local hardware store. It wasn’t all that long ago that folding-sliding doors for your living room were considered to be a poor investment. How Can You Check and Improve the Insulation For Sliding Patio Doors?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Sliding patio doors make a wonderful fashion addition a home. They are both trendy, eye catching, and increase the value of a home. These doors will come with insulation but over time the insulation will become worn leading to outdoor air blowing through the edges of the door. The best way to check for air leaks is run your hand across the edges to feel for cold air coming through. If you feel air coming through, there are a number of things you can do to improve the insulation for the sliding patio doors. As well, a heat gun will tell you how cold the surface of the glass. You cam also check when it is cold and windy.

1. One very good method of decreasing energy consumption due to air blowing through the patio doors is to purchase curtains that insulate patio doors. Insulated patio door drapes are customizable to fit the situation. In the winter time you can use these insulated drapes which are available in a variety of styles and colors. In the spring, you can change to lighter drapes.

2. In the winter time, you can acquire the insulation effect by hanging a sheet of clear plastic over the entire opening which will block the air space between the plastic and the door. Sunlight will be able to shine through the house while the plastic blocks the air. You can cover the entire patio door with shrink plastic, but you will not be able you use the door until you remove the clear plastic.

3. A double pane window will also block the air from coming into the room. This will allow you to reduce the size of the space that is permitting the cold air to come in to the home. There are actually triple pane windows available on the market, but you will have to pay more.

4. In the spring, attach solar film on the door windows. Put it on the inside to minimize weathering. It will drastically cut the amount of heat coming through the door. This film can be purchased online. In the fall, assemble 4 shutter doors with inset hinges. At the unattached end, put a magnetic strip on the side facing outdoors and line it up with a similar strip on the adjacent framing. When closed, the door space is greatly reduced and keeps cold drafts coming from edges.

5. There are kits available that contain rubberized weather stripping. You can use this stripping to replace the worn seals around the door. These kits can be purchased online or at a home improvement store.

6. If you use vertical blinds, replace them with insulated vertical blinds.

7. There is foam weather stripping that can be used to seal spots where a draft can be felt. Make sure the seals around the edges are in place.

The purpose of a sliding glass door’s weather-stripping is to decrease cold air from coming into the home thereby keeping the home warm, comfortable, as well as lowering your energy costs. It is important to maintain these stylish doors so they remain durable for many years.
