Landscaping Your Backyard Adds So Much to the Home

Many people would first wonder why they should even bother landscaping their backyard. A plot of grass, a patio, and its all good to go. I’ve been in a lot of houses over time and have seen some truly spectacular backyards and some of the most barren plots of dirt you can imagine. The best looking backyards speak of nature and give a real impression of beauty and a feeling of comfort and relaxation. It’s no wonder why people go to parks to get away or take gardening as a hobby. It’s no wonder why people love flowers and pristine scenes of nature. Creating that in your backyard will bring a place of peace, and give you something to do in maintaining it.

On the flip side the worst backyards give an impression of negativity. How can one find peace or relax on a big patch of dirt? It looks like a desert. Writers and philosophers would associate a desert with lonelyness and emptiness. The reasons can be many why a backyard is kept in a state of disarray. Time can be a problem in that the home owner is always busy and has no time. Perhaps this suggests someone who needs to take a vacation, or just some time off. It doesn’t take too long to plant a flower. Other times the home owner just doesn’t care. That’s alright because it’s their property to do with what they want. The simple fact is that it can be so much more; so much more inviting. The real benefit is that a beautiful backyard really adds to the value of the house too, so why would you not want to make it beautiful?

Ideas and designs are almost infinite. Less is more as some would say, so in the case of a smaller backyard a little grass, a few bushes, a patio and a retaining stone wall could be just fine. A larger backyard would call for more, but even then it doesn’t always take a lot. Our backyard is rather large by most suburban standards and it looks great. What all is there? A large grassy area, a cement patio, and an area circumventing the grass that is covered in an assortment of trees and bushes, not a lot mind you, but just enough to evenly space things out and make it look full, and lastly there is a gazebo which was there when we moved in.

If you’re serious about landscaping your backyard then take a moment and consider your options as to how to proceed. If money is no option you could hire a landscaper and go over ideas with them. Some of the best looking backyards I’ve seen have been professionally done and really add to the value of the property. If you’re on a budget than books are the best way to go. There are literally hundreds of books on the topic of landscaping. Stop at the library and borrow a few for the cost of nothing. Take out some writing supplies and take notes on what the books say. Consider your backyard and make a layout of what you would like and where to put it. Consider the terrain and where the best soil is and where the water would run too. A big thing to think about is what plants and trees you want to put back there. Not all plants are suited for all climates. Some plants will grow where others would quickly die.

Finally it’s time to do something with that blank cement patio. Simple ideas to start with include just getting a patio furniture set, and a fire pit. This creates an inviting place for family and friends to spend time outside enjoying each others company, while the warmth of the fire keeps people feeling comfortable and safe well into the night hours. Some people like to get fancy with their designs and this is where the fun begins. Always consider a budget before starting so you don’t get carried away. That cement patio can be turned into something truly wonderful to behold in a few key ways. First off, you can section off areas where you want to tear the concrete up and put plants there, then put a small stone wall around them. A cobble stone path would really create character and contrast in the most commonly traveled areas. And what guy wouldn’t want a built in outdoor barbecue? How to Pick the Right Outdoor Fire Pit For Your Needs

When it comes to purchasing an outdoor fireplace for the backyard or patio, safety should always be the top priority. While most designs have been tested and are generally considered safe, it is also true that some are safer than others. Currently, the two most popular types of outdoor fireplaces are Fire Pits and Chimineas. While both provide copious amounts of heat and are aesthetically pleasing, there costs and benefits associated with each design.

The first thing owners and guests alike will notice about a chiminea is that it does not produces quite as much smoke or heat as a fire pit. That is because a chiminea is a lot like a standard chimney. It has a single opening that cleanly and efficiently burns fuel.

A fire pit, on the other hand, is an open fireplace that is much like a simple ring of heated rocks. And while they do occasionally have small chimneys, the wide opening prevents proper ventilation and protection. That is why fire pits can smolder, or flare up depending on the wind.

One major disadvantage of fire pits is that they do produce an awful lot of smoke. This may not be a major concern if they are being used at a party, but for families that enjoy gathering around their outdoor fireplaces every evening as the weather gets colder, a fire pit can be a bit much. In fact, it may even upset and annoy the neighbors if they are also outdoors. And because fire pits do not burn as cleanly or as evenly as chimineas, they often leave a lot of unburned ash that must be swept up. In all honestly, fire pits are better suited for campgrounds than they are for backyards, especially if you have neighbors only a few yards away.

Conversely, the design of the chiminea allows fresh air to enter the fire and smoke to exit from the top, without annoying or upsetting your guests or neighbors. Chimineas are also much safer because they enclose the fire, rather than leaving it open. Of course, we’d all like to believe that responsible adults can host a party without anyone getting hurt. But sometimes people drink too much at parties, which obviously makes it much riskier having an open fire around, rather than an enclosed one. It is also true that a fire pit, just like an outdoor grill or barbeque easily be tipped over, causing a big mess and possibly even a fire.

But wait a minute! Don’t fire pits have any good points? We’re glad you asked. We don’t mean to seem overly harsh on them. Fire pits really do make great outdoor fireplaces, but not necessarily for the backyard. To begin with, they produce a lot of warmth and they can often accommodate large groups of people. Whereas, chimineas do not get as hot and are really only for small groups of people. Also, fire pits are often portable, which means you can pack them up and take them to your favorite camping site without much difficulty.

But fire pits are still more dangerous and are often much messier. Really, the only way a homeowner could safely keep a fire pit is if he has a large patio and no one living nearby. As we mentioned, these devices produce a lot of smoke and sometimes ash, so it would be irresponsible to own one with neighbors only a few yards away.

Materials

When looking for a quality outdoor fire place, you must pay close attention to the materials. Presently, stores sell fireplaces that are made of steel, cooper or clay. While these units may provide warm and serve you well for a season or two, they are not nearly as safe or as durable as cast iron or aluminum fireplaces. There’s a reason why cast iron stoves have been used to heat homes for hundreds of years. Not only do they provide more warmth, more efficiently, but they will also last a very long time.

All of the other materials, whether used for fire pits or chimineas, are virtually disposable by comparison. Sheet metal, for instance, will melt and rust. Clay can be severely damaged by either hot or cold weather. And while copper does look great and does provide adequate warmth, it is definitely a high-maintenance metal and must be continually cleaned to prevent patina and tarnish.

The only real drawback of a cast iron outdoor fireplace is that it is extremely heavy. So, if you are looking for a portable model to take on occasional camping trip, it is probably best to go with a smaller aluminum fireplace.

Operation

Fire pits can be fueled by regular, store bought coal, while chimineas run best on the same fire logs that are used in home fireplaces. A word of caution: fire pits can smolder for hours, even days if the are not properly extinguished. Not surprisingly, this increases the changes that embers or sparks might blow out of the pit and cause damage to your property. So, make certain that all open fires are extinguished before you turn in for the night.

Other Options

We would be remiss if we did not at least mention the other two outdoor heating options. They include pagodas and gel fire bowls. Believe it or not, these are the most popular outdoor heating options. Primarily because they are inexpensive and do not require much maintenance. However, neither a pagoda nor a gel fire bowl could rightly be called an outdoor fireplace. In truth, they are little more than small individual outdoor heating devices. Really, there is no way either item can provide enough heat for a family, nonetheless a party or get together. They are designed for individual use, nothing more.

In conclusion, when shopping for an outdoor fireplace, the best advice you can follow it to be responsible and consider your neighbors. As we mentioned, if you have neighbors living in close proximity, it is probably not a good idea to purchase a fire pit. If, however, you live out in the wilderness and have a large open patio, a fire pit may fit.

Why Rocks Could Help You Spruce up Your Landscaping

There are various ways in which you can add rocks to your landscaping and they can be anything from simple walkways to unique features. It all depends upon your personal preferences but it is possible for you to completely remove any grass if you do not use it and replace it by placing down rocks. Where it lacks in color you can replace it with flowers which are surrounded by the rocks and that will also help to keep weeds away. However, remember that flowers do need proper drainage so they will need enough soil under them in order to survive.

Walkways prove quite common as many people prefer to have separate paths for guests to walk up. Walking up a driveway can be risky, especially if a car is not there yet the person is on their way home and they naturally zoom up the driveway! So, creating a separate walkway is a really good idea.

Rocks come in a variety of colors so you can create a nice, colorful walkway if you wish. Many people have the image that rocks are boring and grey, but that simply is not always the case. If you shop around you will find a number of different colored rocks which would be more than suitable to use for a unique walkway. One thing to keep in kind with a walkway too is that the rocks need to be flat and they also need to be positioned properly. If they aren’t it could be potentially dangerous as you could easily fall and either sprain or break something.

One thing that you can do to ensure that the rocks stay in place is to dig at least four inches of soil from under each stone, place a layer of gravel down and then place the stone back. That should keep the rocks sturdy enough to hold your weight.

Overall rocks can really help to brighten up the landscaping and give your garden a great, stunning look. Shop around to find different types of rock and that way you will get a little variety in what you use.

How To Create A Great Landscape Design

Landscaping is a good mix of being creative and practical. When you follow proper design principles then you will get something that does what you want it and is also good to look at. Professional landscapers start by looking at the available space and dividing it into areas for different purposes.

Each area, sometimes called an activity zone has a particuar purpose – so there might be a flower and a vegetable garden and maybe a paved area for walking on, a pond or other water feature because these encourage more wildlife and maybe a deck or patio for relaxing on. These and other areas as well as fences, sheds and paths are all part of the whole and each piece of the landscape should be considered in relation to the others.

If you want to create something that is both practical and good to look at then it is a good idea to make some outlines of different designs – if you don’t feel comfortable with this then there is software to help you.

You need to decide the kind of flowers and other plants that you want in each area and where they will grow best. You might want to consider whether to a multi-leveled step garden with the areas in tiers is suited to your needs. This can work to the best advantage in a rectangular garden with one side against the wall of your house. Perhaps you prefer your garden to be circular so that it can be viewed from all sides.

Don’t forget about the ongoing business of gardening and the need for sheds to hold tools and the lawnmowe. These areas are best kept flat. Walkways should be stepped or leveled, and the deck or patio should be raised.

Give your imagination free rein when you are working out the various positions for trees and flowers of different species. Maybe you want shady trees for sitting under or some fruit trees so that you can grow your own apples or pears etc.

Do your research and learn about pruning practices, in order to keep your home safe and to keep your trees healthy. Don’t plant too close to the house because tree roots will spread and cause problems. Check the proper time of year for transplanting flowers and shrubs, and weed regularly to keep your garden tidy.

If you have pets or young children – or if you just want to keep parts of the garden out of bounds then you will need some fencing. Fencing can be in the form of chain link, or something that looks good such as wrought iron, redwood or brick.

Have some idea of the time and effort you need to put caring for your garden once everything is up and running. Some plants need a lot more care than others or may need to be replanted year after year. Perennials will grow back year after year whereas annuals will need replanting every year.

Don’t forget to take account of the how much sunshine vs shade for you need in different areas. That will have affect the type of plants you can put there. You also need to think about the amount of water from rainfall and how often you will need to be out there with the watering can. Some plants are very sun or drought tolerant, but others need more shade and soil that is always moist.

Whatever you do will depend on your particular geography, climate and conditions. These things will determine how long your growing season is, what mix of evergreen, deciduous or fruit trees you want and what will grow in your garden.

You don’t need to be an expert landscaper to make a start and produce some great results. Start simple – you can always add or re-do as your knowledge and experience grows. Everyone has some failures but when you see the results of your efforts you’ll be happy at the way your skills have developed.

How Shrubs Can Help With Your Landscaping

Sometimes the only way to truly brighten up a garden is to introduce some shrubs into it. They add a touch of color and they are fairly easy to maintain too. With so much choice available it is hard not to find something which you like and you should notice that it can make a big difference to your garden having the right type of shrubs.

Each shrub looks different and so they will bring different results to the landscaping. This means that you should plan ahead and see what the overall look is that you are trying to achieve. Once you know that you can then start to research the types of shrubs available.

• Azalea

Azaleas are flowering shrubs and they can look really pretty when they are in bloom. Although they only have one flower per stem, they do have a lot of stems which means that when they are in bloom, they have a lot of color! They tend to do best when grown in acidic garden soil in a shady position. There are also various different species of Azalea so you will need to research to see which one is best for you as some need regular pruning.

• The Hardy Shrub Rose

The Hardy Shrub Rose is a fairly popular type of shrub and they come in beautiful colors. They are ideal to maintain and unlike other roses they are disease resistant and they tend to bloom all season. They can really be planted anywhere so they are great for any garden.

• Hydrangea

Hydrangea plants again add plenty of color to the garden and one of their best advantages includes the fact that they are extremely easy to grow. They are best used for borders and in fairly large containers. Definitely a shrub for most gardens!

As well as the ones mentioned above there are also many more. The mistake many people make when thinking of shrubs is that they are just green and they have no color. Obviously after reading the descriptions above you will notice that shrubs do in fact have color and often quite a lot of it! They truly can brighten up the garden and if used in borders or in flower beds, they will really make the garden look unique. Just remember that although they are fairly easy maintenance, they still need some looking after and it is always best to research every plant you get beforehand.

Temporary Or Portable Greenhouse – Is This What You Need?

Why would you want a small portable greenhouse? I can only tell you that for me it works really well as we live at about 9000 ft in the Rocky Mountains and the amount of snow that we get in the winter would demolish a small greenhouse. We do, however, have another home in New Mexico where the winters are cold but there is little snow.

I can use the greenhouse in New Mexico in the winter to carry my plants over into the spring when we dismantle the greenhouse and move it along with all my plants to the mountain home in Colorado. It doesn’t get really warm enough to grow outdoors on the mountain until June but we move at the end of April. Also, for our vegetables, we must use the greenhouse for almost the entire summer as our nights are too cold for the vegetable to mature outdoors. Sometime early in November or so, we move the greenhouse back south to winter our plants and continue harvesting the vegetables.

Portable greenhouses work great in this situation because of the easy set up. The price is also very reasonable for the use we are able to get out of it. They can be folded out in an accordion style with simple posts in the middle. It is just perfect for our seedlings in the spring as well as our wintered plants storage.

Even though the portable greenhouses are smaller and inexpensive, many are made of durable and lasting materials with tear-resistant plastic that blocks UV rays but allows about 75% of the sunlight to come through to the plants. Most also have sturdy zippers in the roof for necessary venting. This venting is important especially for us with the amount of sun we experience in New Mexico even in the winter. It may be cold outside but inside the greenhouse, it can get extremely warm.

Because of the amount of wind we receive, we do need to secure the greenhouse with extra supports. Portable greenhouses are very lightweight aluminum so we need to provide that extra support but don’t mind at all considering the benefits we get from wintering our favorite plants and having the fresh vegetables from our spring seedlings.
