Decluttering – The Emotional Side
Posted By Houston Decorator on January 19, 2011
Letting go of things that have been around for a long time can have emotional consequences. People often use this as a reason to hold onto things that they patently do not need. They place sometimes unnecessary emotional importance to items because they do not relish change in their lives and this makes it even harder to get rid of them.
You may have had an experience where you didn’t have a lot of material things when you were young and consequently can stand to get rid of anything whilst also being a bit of a hoarder. There is also that insecurity that as soon as you get rid of something you are going to need it. All these feelings are very common and often it takes someone really getting to the end of their tether before they can really face serious decluttering. They have to wait until the pain of chaos outweighs the need to keep holding onto loads of stuff.
When you are faced with sentimental and precious items and you simply cannot decide whether to keep them or throw them away it can eat into the time you have to finish what might be quite an extensive decluttering job. To get it done you will need to keep up the momentum of the project by making quick decisions. If you really can’t make a decision to bin or keep something put these things into a ‘decide later’ box.
This will alleviate pressure on you, which is important, as you don’t want to throw away something precious or something that brings back pleasurable memories every now and then.
