By doing so you will be able to decide if you want to hire that person to work for you or not. Not all electricians offer free estimates but many of them do. You have nothing to lose by contacting them to see what they can offer you.
Based on those free estimates for the work, you can get a good idea of how much it is going to cost you to get the job done. Most of the time it is standard to pay the electrician at the time the work is completed. If the cost is substantial you may want to talk to them about payment arrangements. They may be willing to allow you to pay a portion of it over the next several months.
