Difficulty: Intermediate

Equipment:
Hardwood flooring cleaner
Floor buffer (rented)
Dust mask, respirator and goggles
Sand paper
Vacuum cleaner
Mop
Extendable painting roller
Paint brushes
Masking tape

You will need to rent a floor buffer to complete this task!
If your wood floor has become scratched and dull then perhaps it is a good idea to consider resurfacing your floor.
If your floor is not too deeply scratched you can use a buffer and a can of floor finish to resurface it.
1) Remove any furniture from the room.
2) Start by preparing the floor, clean it thoroughly.
3) You will need to sand down the whole floor. Start by sanding anywhere the buffer cannot reach by hand. This will include all the edges and corners of the room.
4) Sand the centre of the room with the buffer. Use a smooth side to side sweeping motion. Over lap yourself slightly so as to avoid missing any patches of floor. Ask your rental company for advice on operation of the buffer.
5) Once the floor has been sanded leave the dust to settle for a quarter of an hour.
6) Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the floor of any dust and then wipe it. Make sure that the floor is dust free.
7) Cover the edges of the walls with masking tape so that you don’t paint any flooring finish onto the walls. Start painting the new finish in the far corner of the room so that you are next to the door when you finish.
8) When applying the finish to the floor it is essential that you don’t let the edge of the painted finish dry. For this reason is best to alternate your painting as explained below.
9) First take a medium sized paint brush (80mm) and paint the edge of the room, remembering to only paint for a short while. Check your finish to see how long it takes to dry, paint for less than half of this time, no matter how far through you are.
10) Pour finish onto the floor, along the grain. Use an extendable paint roller to spread this. Don’t pour too much on as you will only be spreading for the amount of time that you were painting in stage 9. Make sure that you paint over any edges of paint from the painting in stage 9, the paint should still be wet and will ensure that the finish will be even and won’t have any lines where painting has overlapped.
11) Now carry on painting the edge of the room. Work quickly so that the edges of the finish don’t dry, keep switching between paintbrush and roller until finished.
12) Leave to dry for the amount of time specified by the manufacturer.

Your floor should look as good as new. You will be able to move furniture back into the room after the required amount of time for the finish to dry completely.

Any tools required for this task can be bought from toolbox. They provide a wide variety of tools and equipment.
