How to Create A Focal Point In A Room
Posted By Houston Decorator on January 18, 2011
Some rooms have a natural focal point already, but other rooms may need you to add something in order to create a focal point. Its important that before you add anything you make sure you look at the room closely to see what it has to offer. If you already have something like a fireplace in the room, this is a natural focal point that can easily be played up when decorating.
A large piece you already have in the room might make a great focal point, such as awood bookshelf,an entertainment center, oak dressers, or even a couch. If you already have something you can use, creating a focal point might be as easy as rearranging some furniture. Otherwise, you might have to start from scratch to choose the proper focal point for a room.
The Fireplace as a Focal Point
A fireplace is one of the best natural focal points there is. If you have a fireplace in the room, then there are plenty of ways you can draw attention to it.
Arranging the furniture around the fireplace is an easy way to create an instant focal point, although there are other things you can do. You might draw attention to that area by painting the wall the fireplace is on a different color than the rest of the room. You can also draw more attention there by changing the style of the fireplace or adding a new mantle to it. You might also place some great dcor items on the mantle or hang a large piece of art over it.
The Couch as a Focal Point
Do you have a favorite couch that would make a great focal point? You can create this with some rearranging of the room. The couch needs to be in great condition, though if its not, then you can add a slipcover to it.
You can add colorful or patterned pillows or throws to the couch to draw attention there. Arrange the rest of the furniture in the room so that it is facing the couch. A large couch can be placed in the middle of the longest wall in the room. Side tables can be added to the couch as well.
The Armoire or Entertainment Center as a Focal Point
If you have a media room or family room and want an armoire or entertainment center to be its focus, be sure to concentrate on that pieces quality. Youre not going to want a cheap-looking entertainment center, after all, to be the main focus of the room. Thus, be sure to invest in an attractive piece of furniture thats also of decent quality.
You might also consider finding a piece with doors in order to hide any electronics. You can also add flower arrangements, candles, and frames to the furnishing for some additional style.
There are many more ways to create a focal point in a room. Different rooms are going to contain different pieces that you might want to show off. In a bedroom, a popular focal point is the bed, for instance. By using a little creativity, youll be able to show off and highlight your focal point in any room.
