Slate Water Fountains
Posted By Houston Decorator on September 12, 2010
You may have seen decorative stone water fountains at a neighbor’s house, restaurant, doctor’s waiting room or a business office. These water features come in all shapes, styles and designs and you have maybe even thought of purchasing one yourself. The wall fountains are fast becoming the next wave of wall decor for the home or office. They add more life to a room versus a painting or picture. This article will specifically go into detail on slate water fountains.
Slate, along with marble, is a common material used for surfaces in decorative water fountains. Because of its durability it can withstand constant water flowing over its surface. Not only is it durable but when wet the slate tends to display a variety of beautiful natural colors. You may see a dry piece of slate and it may look like just a plain stone but the water on it pulls out hidden colors that may not appear when dry. This slate comes from the Far East like China and India. Manufacturers have looked into getting slate locally in the US but the slate here does not have as vivid of colors as the stone from the East. There are typically different color patterns with the slate and when picking out a fountain you will want to know more about these slate types.
RAJAH (MULTI-COLOR SLATE)
This type of slate has more earthy tones such as reds, yellows and browns. This stone is typically used to obtain a traditional classic look and goes best with copper trim. Overall this type of slate is the most popular.
GREEN SLATE
This stone has mostly greens and yellows. This stone is great because it is very adaptable and can have a contemporary or modern look depending on what trim you decide to match with it.
BLACK SLATE
The black slate is definitely for modern contemporary designing. It is more of a smoky dark grey compared to complete black. This fountain really works best with a stainless steel trim.
Because it is slate the surface will be slightly uneven. Because of this unevenness it will create tiny lips that if not taken care can cause a tiny bit of water to splash off onto the ground. This can easily be fixed. By taking a chisel or screwdriver and filing down the lip or edge it will not splash anymore. The great thing about slate is that although it may appear to be scratching the surface it really does no damage and will not be visible when the stone is wet.
No matter what type of water feature you end up with they all add a vibrant sense of life to your home decor. Imagine relaxing with the subtle sound of running water. It is a great way to unwind and forget about life’s stresses.
