The Connotation of Different Colors When Choosing Painting Options

Posted By on March 12, 2011

A lot of people want to know what the psychological effects of different colors are before choosing them for their room.  You don’t want your bedroom to be insomnia inducing or your kitchen to be unappetizing, do you? The first thing to remember when dealing with color is that no matter how many thousands of paint chips there are in the store, there are really only six colors.

Red – Increases blood pressure.  Stimulates the adrenal glands which make you feel stronger and full of stamina.  Along with the positive effects, red is also associated with anger and may make one feel irritable.

Orange – Red may be linked with passion, but if you want to heat things up in the bedroom, orange may really be the color for you.  It also stimulates your appetite and immune system.  It eliminates negative feelings, opens up your emotions and is a terrific anti-depressant.

Yellow – Very similar to orange, yellow is an optimistic color.  It stimulates the brain and makes muscles more energized.  But be careful of dark or dull yellows, they can bring on feelings of fear.  Also think carefully before putting this color in your bathroom.  It carries negative connotations in that context.

Green – It is the color of our Mother Earth.  It is a calming color.  It is know to relax muscles and help us breath slower and deeper.  Darker or olive greens can have the opposite effect.  They are associated with sickness, death and decay.

Blue – This is a cooling and soothing color.  It is known to lower blood pressure and help regulate sleep patterns.  It makes us think of the sky and the sea, both calming influences.

Purple – Is thought of as a cleansing color.  It has been used in treatment of sunburn and as a mild sedative.  It suppresses the appetite and balances the body’s metabolism.  It is also used in the treatment of nervous disorders.  No wonder this color has been considered a symbol of nobility.

Do these ring true for how color effects you?  Remember these guides as you pick colors for your home.
