When we hear the phrase “decorating the kitchen” we immediately think of the huge things like appliances to buy, the color of the refrigerator, the stove, etc. but we often forget the most important thing which is the lighting. The way we set up the kitchen lights may affect our mood greatly. Yet, oftentimes, we forget about this that is why most kitchens only have simple light bulb just to brighten the room.

In many houses, the kitchen is considered to be the center of the house because it is the area where we prepare and serve food, hang out and others, it is the area where they spend majority of their time throughout the day. Hence, it is not all about the lights’ brightness but it is about the feeling of the room. The room should feel cozy, comfortable and welcoming. Also, in most families, the kitchen is an area where we can be who we are hence private family time is often spent in the kitchen.

Because of this, you will need two kinds of kitchen lights. One, the lights has to be comfortable and soft for those intimate talks in the kitchen. And second, it is necessary to have enough light to let you see your work. You need a light that will let you see if bugs are present in your vegetables or if the food is already cooked. The problem is how you can have these two lights in one to save from installing additional lights.

To do this, you need to have an overhead light. This light does not to be too bright. As a matter of fact, it may be a little dim enough to give a friendly and warm atmosphere in the room. For the food counters, you can use small compact fluorescent lamps so you can clearly see the food you are preparing and pendant lamps are great in lighting your kitchen island.

In addition, you can also install dimmer switches in the kitchen so that you do not have to install a lot of lights and you have control over its brightness. You can turn it brightly while preparing food and dim it when you are having intimate dinner.

You may do anything about your kitchen. You can re-decorate it and buy additional appliances and pieces of furniture but never forget to include the lights in your plans.
