Different Terracotta Items You Can Use To Transform Your Patio And Outdoor Space

Posted By on November 16, 2010

Terracotta pieces have always always been an essential ingredient in all my patio decor projects. Apart form their earthiness, Terracotta pieces blend well with almost any kind of material, architecture and furniture. They have the ability to transform otherwise bland outdoor entertaining spaces into welcoming and warm areas around which some of the most memorable moments are spent with friends and family. Here are some of the more common types of terracotta pieces you can use for your outdoor space.

Planters
Almost everyone who owns a garden owns some kind of terracotta planter. These planters come in different sizes, textures and shades, ranging from a pale tone to richer reddish colors. Planters can have plain surfaces, be decorated with embossed classical motifs or a combed texture. These planters come in a variety of shapes as well. Some people choose to ‘age’ terracotta planters by applying some yogurt on the surface, encouraging the growth of moss and giving it a mature look.

Vases and Urns
These are my absolute favorite. Like planters, urns and terracotta vases also come in different varieties. Additionally, urns can also come with elegant handles located near the rim and neck or near the middle of the piece. These stand out well when grouped together with plain terracotta pieces. However, urns and vases with handles generally look better in larger sizes.

Jugs, Glasses and Coin Holders
Terracotta glasses and coin holders generally come in small sizes that can be used effectively along with medium sized pieces or in smaller patio and outdoor spaces. Stenciling your favorite patterns onto these terracotta pieces can totally transform their appearance and add character to a corner space. Jugs are available in all sizes, and like urns, can add personality to a group of plain terracotta pieces. These almost always come with a single handle positioned much in the same way as a regular kitchen jug.

Wall Art
Terracotta wall art can be contemporary, ethnic or classical. These include embossed or engraved reliefs that can be easily hung on a wall or a Mexican figurine that doubles as a planter for small plants or vines. Mexican figurines are generally colored and have various shades of pale, earthy colors that go well with almost any color. These pieces look spectacular right near the main entrance to a house, complemented by a few plants of varying heights.
