Household Maintenance Practices That Can Help Fix the Bedbug Problem

Exterminating bedbugs do not necessarily mean dealing with poisonous synthetic pesticides or performing advanced procedures that require overly extensive training. Instead, there are some things that you can do yourself to help towards getting rid of these pesky pests.

First, be neat and orderly in the house. Always make sure that all the rooms, beds and other upholstered furniture in the home are regularly and frequently disinfected and organized. Furthermore, be extra meticulous when cleaning narrow cracks on walls and furniture, as these are the typical places where bedbugs love to stay at.

Almost all bedbug infestations start with the proliferation of bedbug larvae and this practice of regular cleaning can easily kill these bugs off. Using brushes and vacuum cleaners can help a lot in physically removing these bedbugs from their hiding places.

Second, use physical barriers like bedcovers and sticky pads to prevent bugs from ever lodging into these places. The most vulnerable piece of home furniture is the bed, as this is the thing that is nearest to humans when they’re sleeping at night. Bedbugs feed at night, so it’s natural for them to prefer hiding in this area. Furthermore, sticky pads should be used only as a diagnostic tool – to see if there really are bedbugs. However, they do little to directly stop infestation.

However, covering the bed does not totally solve the problem. You must also make sure that all the cracks in furniture and in the overall home infrastructure are tightly sealed. Even those holes that are used as joints for wooden furniture can serve as a haven for these annoying pests.

Third, all bedbugs, in any stage of development, can be killed by steam. Thus, exposing these creatures to a hot steam can solve the issue too. However, be sure to expose areas to steam for a sufficient amount of time. Steam takes a while to impart its heat to these creatures. Furthermore, too brief steaming can just moisturize these areas which can even help bedbugs live longer.
