Everyone will at one time or another come up against a leaking tap, this is when you have two choices.

  • Call a plumber.
  • Do it yourself.

Now the first choice can be expense as most plumbers have a call out charge before they do anything to help your problem.

The second can be a little worrying as you are not to sure of what you are doing.

Well if you have got this far, you are interested in number two and it is not really that difficult to do.

Firstly you need to understand the problem.

All that is really wrong with your tap is that a rubber washer is starting to perish. To replacing it is not that difficult.

What you will need to do first is to find where the mains tap is for the house and turn it off. Then go to the tap that is leaking, turn it on and let all the remaining water run out. Once it has finished you will be ready to do the job.

Usually there are not to many tool that are needed but I suggest you have them ready before you start. You will also need a replacement washer.

The basic tools will be.

  • A screw driver
  • An adjustable spanner
  • A pair of mole grips
  • A pair of pliers

There is a screw holding the head of the tap in place. loosen this and remove the head. Loosen and remove the body cover of the tap, then with the adjustable spanner remove the body from the tap.

At the base of the tap body you will find the perishing rubber washer that needs to be replaced. Normally there is a small securing nut which will need to be carefully removed.

Replace the washer, reassemble starting with the small screw,

Then reassemble the tap being careful not to over tighten any of the nuts.

Test by turning the water on again.

The best way is to try it for yourself its a lot easier than you think.
