Pool Opening – To Do It Yourself, Or To Hire A Company?

Posted By on February 2, 2011

Opening a pool for spring and summer is one of those not-so-simple yet necessary tasks. Doing the pool opening yourself is a long, complicated process that may take up several weekends. The reward is money saved but time wasted.

Do you think hiring a pool company to do the pool opening for you is expensive? In reality, it is not so bad–it may be anywhere from $150 to $500 for a very neglected, poorly-kept pool. If you are an average household that took care to properly close the pool down for winter, then your costs will be on the lower end. To further reduce costs, you could do some of the physical labor yourself prior to the arrival of the pool company. This includes removing the pool cover and placing it in storage, then in turn taking any pool equipment out of storage, as well as any other items the company may need, and placing it all by the pool for easy access.

The quicker the company can get the job done, the cheaper the overall cost will be for you! The company will then arrive and likely first test the chemistry of the water as it stands. If needed, they will do a super-chlorination to kill any bacteria. They will then remove debris from the pool if needed, and clean around the pool deck with a pressure washer. Filters, plugs, o-rings, seams, and other equipment/fixtures will be inspected and maintained. The company will regularly check the chemistry of the water, and may wish to come back the next day to do a re-check after any added chemicals have been dissolved.
