And unlike other residences, more often than not musicians have a considerable amount of gear that gets left behind when it’s time to hit the road. Unlike regular vacation time, which might involve a couple of weeks away, some touring musicians see themselves on the road for months at a time. And that means paying a bit more attention to home security, especially where precious pieces of equipment are concerned.
For a just-starting-out touring musician, it is important to not get so swept away in all of the excitement and planning that mistakes are made when it comes to prepping a house or apartment for an extended absence. Be sure that seriously expensive pieces of gear, especially vintage stuff, is put away safely and securely. Don’t leave window blinds open, for those walking by to set their gaze on a vintage Moog or fancy drum set. Also consider moving particularly special pieces of equipment that aren’t going on tour to a trusted friend or family member’s house if a bit worried. Another great option that goes beyond home security is considering renter’s insurance, which often covers musical equipment along with other belongings.
Of course, simple precautions will go a long way as far as home security is concerned. Being sure that windows and doors are securely locked and shut, and that window air condoning units are removed, is a great step in the right direction towards overall safety. Likewise, it is important to not draw attention to one’s living space. Don’t turn off every single light. Don’t leave them all on, either. Try to find a happy medium, or invest in an affordable timer for interior and exterior light, and allow it to make the home look busy. Whether living in an apartment or a house, holding mail and newspaper delivery is a crucial step to ensure that it’s not obvious that you’re not home. Sometimes, a pile of mail is all that a robber needs to decide to strike.
Of course, touring musicians should also consider the obvious when it comes to protecting their homes and instruments. Investing in even a basic home alarm system is a great idea, because it brings that extra level of protection that truly does make the difference. Be sure to always set the alarm, rather than rushing out to meet the rest of the band and forgetting about it entirely. Likewise, for anyone concerned about an extended absence, subletting might be a better option than leaving an apartment left untouched. Be sure to thoroughly screen potential subletters, though, and always double check with the building manager or landlord to make sure that it is not going to cause any problem to have someone else going in and out for a month or so.
