How to Pick the Right Window Treatments
Posted By Houston Decorator on February 2, 2011
When decorating a home, most people don’t think much about the way the windows look. This is unfortunate, as the window treatments you choose can transform the look from dull to dazzling. Remember, mini blinds and curtains are not your only available choices.
Of course, there are other things you need to keep in mind when it comes to choosing window treatments for your home. Two other things you need to consider are privacy and the level of sunlight that comes in. You also want whatever you choose to flow with the rest of your décor.
Some Reasonable Choices
The first step in choosing window treatments depends largely on what room you want them for. For instance, you may want a darker-colored shade or blind, or one made of wood, for the bedroom, as this will only allow a minimal amount of light to come in. For a kitchen, on the other hand, you’re probably going for more sunshine and brightness. Thus, you may want a lightweight shade or mini blind for this room. Vertical blinds versus horizontal blinds depends on your personal preference. Or instead you could go with a light-colored wood shutter that you can open up, giving you the full benefit of natural sunlight.
Window treatments with more color are your best bet for the living area. Adding color around your windows works wonders in terms of updating the look of your home. As long as it’s colorful, any type of fabric will do-anything from luxurious fabrics to vinyl. When purchasing your treatments, just be sure you’re taking into consideration your lighting and privacy needs, as well as your budget.
Privacy Counts as Well
Some people want to know that no one can see inside their home at night, which allows them to feel more secure. You can find a shade perfect for this at certain specialty stores. Made from perforated material, this custom roller shade gives only a one-way view. Thus, when it’s pulled down, light gets in and you can see out, but any would-be intruder would not be able to see inside.
Do you love the look of sheer curtains but still want some privacy in the evenings? Well, you can have the best of both worlds! By using sheer curtains that are three times as wide as the window they’re covering, the dense gathers will keep anyone outside from seeing in. The best fabrics to use here are voile and batiste.
Size Plays a Role
Do you have an extremely large window? If you have a window in your home that’s 6 or 7 feet wide, consider using blinds and draperies. First install panels of blinds across the width of the window, and then add style and color to the look by hanging some richly textured drapes. The blinds will provide all the light control and privacy you need, while the draperies work to dress up the room.
Another option is to install a track across the entire width of the window in question, particularly if it takes up nearly an entire wall. Then you can close your drapes or curtains partially around the window or open them up completely to expose the entire wall and window. What results is a truly unique look that’s sure to attract attention in the room.
The choices in today’s window treatments are seemingly endless, allowing you to have whatever you need in terms of privacy, lighting, and style. Thus, you can get the amount of light you want and the fabulous style you’re looking for-all while maintaining your privacy in the evening hours.
